According to the ISO 8373 standard, an industrial robot is an automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose manipulator, programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile, for use in industrial automation applications. Industrial robots can be classified as follows: SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) robots with mechanical arms; anthropomorphic (articulated like the human arm) or Cartesian (Gantry) robots (resulting from the combination of two or more parallel or rotary joints, whose axes are coincident with a Cartesian coordinate system each of which with a single free axis motion). In the packaging industry, robots are used for handling products, like in "pick & place" applications (for transferring products from the conveyor belt to the packaging unit), or for palletising purposes.
Lo standard ISO 8373 definisce un robot industriale come un manipolatore automatizzato e multiscopo, programmabile lungo tre o più assi (direzioni di movimento), fisso o mobile, per utilizzi in applicazioni di automazione industriale. I robot impiegati dall'industria sono bracci meccanici del tipo SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm), antropomorfi (che si muovono similmente al braccio umano) o cartesiani (risultanti dalla combinazione di due o più giunti rotanti o paralleli, i cui assi coincidono con il sistema di coordinate cartesiano, ciascuno dotato di un solo grado di libertà). Nel settore dell'imballaggio i robot vengono utilizzati per la movimentazione degli oggetti, come nelle applicazioni "pick & place" (trasferimento di oggetti dal nastro trasportatore all'interno di un imballaggio), oppure per la palettizzazione.
