After the good performance in 2021, Italian packaging production for the month of February saw an uptrend, indicating a direction of solid growth that, for the moment, is affected in only some measure by supply chain issues, the increase in the cost of raw materials, the impact of inflation on consumption and geopolitical instability.
The aggregate index of Italian packaging production increased by 3.4% compared to February 2021. This result is the average of the dynamics of the various sectors. In the second month of the year, only the production of metal packaging decreased (-4.2 compared to the same period the year before), while all other segments experienced growth. The trend is driven by the production of glass packaging (+5.6% against February 2021), paper and cardboard (+4.3%) and plastic (4.2%).
Internationally speaking, packaging production of the European Union 27 in February was even more positive than the Italian trend, with an increase of +4.1% compared to the same month in 2021. All the main countries contributed to this positive dynamic. Noteworthy is the strong growth seen by Spain (+5.8% against February 2021), by far the country that has best reacted to the economic crisis caused by Covid-19 containment measures.
